Poverty has ravished the region leaving only a small percentage of parents able to educate their children. This has created a tragic situation where thousands of children are school drop outs and many have never attended school. The children are left as “household helpers”, hopeless, because parents don’t have the resources to support them with uniforms, books, and other supplies to make it possible for them to attend.
Another factor keeping some from school is that they may needed to walk several kilometers away to access better schools. These dynamics add up to a situation where too large a share of the children either miss school regularly or don’t attend at all.
MHM operates a child sponsorship program that provides the resources for vulnerable children to attend school. The Child Sponsorship Program seeks to build meaningful relationships between Ugandan children and their sponsors. Through monthly support, sponsors not only provide for the child’s physical needs but also brings much needed strength and encouragement in the Lord. MHM’s Child Sponsorship Program is currently aims at helping 1000 children in the Eastern region.
The primary focus of sponsorship is providing school fees, supplies, and the required uniforms for primary and secondary aged children. Sponsorship also provides basic items including a blanket, shoes and personal hygiene articles such as a toothbrush. Most of these children have lost one or both parents and without support would not be able to attend school.
MHM’s program is similar to others in that we provide for the child’s needs but different in that we also strive to provide a more personal relationship. MHM’s approach is responsive to individual needs of sponsored children. The Team in Uganda personally visits each child multiple times each month and are knowledgeable about them and their family. Another advantage is that sponsors are able to meet their sponsored child in person any time they visit Uganda.
